Uniting Hollywood’s famous frights with die-hard fans.

Horror movies – with their countless tropes, traps, and tricks – have captured the collective imagination for decades. 'Deus Ex Machina' offers an expansive curatorial history of the art-form for film lovers, die-hard fans, and cult-classic enthusiasts in a collectible volume by Lena Rose.

'Deus Ex Machina' celebrates the structure and storytelling of Hollywood horror. Using image and text, the book investigates this crowd-pleasing genre’s visual iconography, archetypes, and iterative language to deepen our understanding of how it somehow manages to bring both comfort and catharsis to audiences across the globe.

Lena Rose envisioned the reader's experience as being in the editing booth of their very own masterpiece. Each page is designed to resemble a film frame, with each chapter a new scene, and each page number reflected as a timestamp. Typography is set in Pragmatica, designed by Paratype. Dust and foreign-matter overlays are used throughout the design, giving each page the distinct feeling of found footage, a gesture that becomes more pronounced as the book reaches its goriest, campiest best.

The book serves as both collector's item and coursebook: through in-depth interviews with creators in the field and expert analysis of classic examples, Lena Rose offers a dynamic deep-dive through the lineage of the genre, sure to captivate horror aficionados and curious novices alike.
